Road to Rangoon , Frame 3

After-Action Report
5/28/2011
by Brooke, GL, 135 Sqn.

This was a scenario that ran in the multiplayer on-line air-combat simulation Aces High.

I was the Group Leader (GL) of 135 Sqn, an RAF fighter group. We were flying Hurricane I's. The group consisted of airbull, Amsoil, boo, me (Brooke), c4159, coombzy, Klingan, nrshida, prono, Sharky, SirNuke, and Twizzty.

Map

A map of the battle area for us. Our home base was a1, the airfield at Rangoon.

Mission 1

135 Squadron starting takeoff roll in our Hurricane I's. From right to left: Twizzty, me (Brooke), boo, SirNuke, Amsoil, prono, Sharky, coombzy, nrshida, airbull, Klingan, and c4159. t=0:00

We were to patrol in sectors 5.11 to 7.11 and broke up into two flights, each with half of that to cover. About 50 minutes after takeoff, an attack with bombers was announced up at a4 (NE of Rangoon). We hurried back toward Rangoon, but the fight was over before we got there. We then patrolled SE and SW of Rangoon, but there were no more attacks prior to 1:18, and we landed for more fuel.

I'm touching down at A1, followed by airbull, Amsoil, and boo on final. t=1:18

Mission 2

We were assigned to patrol sector 8.11. At about 2:10 mark, we ran across a group of enemies, called them out on the radio, and engaged.

I blow through the leading group of Zeros. One of the A6M2's fires at me as we pass head on. Behind me in this shot are airbull, prono, and c4159. t=2:15

I dive after a couple of Zeros that are chasing c4159, trying to clear him. It at least partially works -- the one 200 yards in front of me breaks off.

Soon, some Brewsters join us in the fight.

I put some shots into one of the A6M2's. t=2:19

I put some shots into another Zero, as Snibbo in his Brewster Buffalo is working a head-on pass on the same Zero. t=2:19

I put a goodly number of 303 rounds into another Zero. I give him a fuel leak, but don't put him down. t=2:20

At this point, bombers were announced approaching Rangoon. Airbull and I got a bit separated from the others and from the group of Brewsters. I called for people who could get clear to head there, but I tangled a bit more with some of the Zeros near airbull, as he was still heavily engaged. But his engine failed due to an oil hit, so I disengaged and headed north toward Rangoon.

Flying into the Rangoon area, most bombers were already being swarmed by the fighters that were already in the area. Here, a group of G4M1's is being pursued by kansas2 and Rapier. t=2:28

I pick out one of the few remaining G4M1's and attack, along with BearKats in his Brewster. t=2:28

I press my attack in close. My gunfire sets the Betty on fire, and I pull up to avoid collision. I get an assist on this one. t=2:28

Some A6M5b's are in the area, up high, making attack runs on the various allied planes. I go after the ones that I can.

Dantoo (in his Brewster) and I are chasing an A6M5b. Dantoo sets him on fire.

I latch onto another A6M5b (along with about 4 other allied fighters doing the same). I land hits on him here and there and then a final good burst (this picture) that sets his wing on fire. I got an assist. t=2:32

Mission 3

After this, the surviving members of 135 Sqn replaned at Rangoon airfield (A1). We took back off and climbed hard in the vicinity of Rangoon, to protect from any last bomber attacks. Bombers did indeed show up, and we attacked them.

My first pass on a lone G4M1. It takes more passes to kill him, along with a pass from a Brewster, but I get the kill for this one. t=2:44

That was the last attack by the enemy, and we landed for the end of the day after that.

Conclusion

I shot down one G4M1 and got an assist on a A6M5b and a G4M1.

Overall, 135 Sqn killed 15 aircraft and got 10 assists.
