Road to Rangoon , Frame 2

After-Action Report
5/21/2011
by Brooke, GL, 135 Sqn.

This was a scenario that ran in the multiplayer on-line air-combat simulation Aces High.

I was the Group Leader (GL) of 135 Sqn, an RAF fighter group. We were flying Hurricane I's. The group consisted of me (Brooke), Klingan, airbull, SirNuke, Amsoil, Twizzty, yarbles, zack1234, prono, coombzy, Sharky, and DrBone, and c4159.

Map

A map of the battle area for us. Our home base was a1, the airfield at Rangoon.

Mission 1

135 Sqn rolling in our trusty Hurricane I's. From right to left: me (Brooke), Twizzty, Amsoil, SirNuke, coombzy, prono, ForkTail, Sharky, airbull, and LittleJon. t= 0:00

We were ordered to patrol south and southwest of Rangoon (broken up into two flights). We patrolled for about an hour when Zeros were spotted and engaged south of Rangoon, in sector 8.10.

I dive vertically on some Zeros tangling with 135 Sqn and some Brewsters. Below, left to right: SirNuke, Twizzty, coombzy, DrBone, BearKats, and Klingan. t=0:37

I blow the tail off one of the Zeros. I didn't get an assist, so a lot of people must have gotten a piece of this one.

After this fight, there were reports of many enemy fighters east of Rangoon, and we went north to help.

Arriving into the area east of Rangoon, spotting Zeros, some of them up at 24k. From left to right: TBear, HiVolt, Amsoil, SirNuke, yarbles, Klingan, me, mir, cactus, and Soulyss. t=1:00

I pursue a Zero, putting rounds into him. Sharky is behind me firing at him, too, but he has just shot my rudder off. Yikes! This is the Zero I got a kill on. t=1:04

After this fight, we were ordered south to scout.

I see a lot of enemy bogies once we are far south (near a11, which is south of v25 along the coast). They are the faint black dots in this forward-left view. t=1:48

I reported the contacts on the radio. I didn't see any likely bombers -- it seemed from what I saw to be several fighter groups heading west out of a11. I recall that there was a report from another couple of scouts about bombers heading back east, so I had the 135 Sqn people with me head to a position just a little north of a11, to see if we could see bombers heading back toward land. We didn't see anything, so we headed northeast (inland) -- nothing -- then north along the coast. Still nothing. Alas, we were not able to spot the bombers.

By that time, we were low of fuel, so once we were back north, we replaned at Rangoon.

Mission 2

We climbed to 24k just south of Rangoon (getting back up to altitude) and just got up to 24k when enemies showed up at that altitude. 135 Sqn got into a swirling fight with the Zeros.

Klingan blows the tail off a Zero the two of us were chasing near Rangoon. t=2:32

Just after finishing up with the Zeros, reports of inbound bombers were announced on the radio. We headed toward the Rangoon HQ and factories, climbing hard (as we had lost altitude in our fighting with the Zeros).

The Betties showing up near Rangoon. 135 Sqn is heading in, and there are other allied fighters already in the area mixing it up. From left to right: AHTbolt, 68Cav, HiVolt, LeitWolf, AHJoker, me, BlueE, Vasco, mir, TwinTail, airbull, Snibbo, 1ijac, and Dantoo. t=2:32

Even at top speed, it was hard for us to close on Betties. Since we had to climb to get there, instead of going for the bombers, we tangled with the Zero escorts, working to tie them up. I got in a few short fights, and ended up in a longer fight with an aggressively flown Ki-45.

I put a lot of 303 rounds into the Ki-45 (Bf 110C-4b). But he manages to make a run for it, and I can't catch him. t=2:36

That was the last fight, and we returned to base afterward.

Conclusion

I shot down one A6M2.

Overall, 135 Sqn killed 24 aircraft and got 32 assists. Good work, guys!
